The Vermont National Guard Fallen Memorial 10K Walk/Run

Saturday September 12, 2009

Camp Johnson in Colchester VT

Set-up: 9am

During the various deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan Vermont has lost 11 of
her National Guard Soldiers. To honor these 11 soldiers a Memorial was
erected on the grounds of the Vermont National Guard Headquarters on
Camp Johnson.  To fund the Memorial and the cost of upkeep the VT Guard has
put on an annual 10K Walk/Run (this being the 3rd annual) called "The Vermont
National Guard Fallen Memorial 10K Walk/Run"..  This year, along with the run, there will be an âll
Vermont Guard BBQ in recognition of the 1800+ men and women of the
Vermont Army National scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan in the fall of 2009.
This will be the largest single deployment of Vermont Guardsmen and
Women since at least WWII, and possibly even the Civil War.
At least half of these men and women have been deployed before, many multiple times.
The goal of the day is to honor the men and women of Vermont who have
served and will continue to serve our great country.

USO volunteers will go to support the event, wish the soldiers and their families well and
be on hand to talk about what services we offer for them, in particular the
United Through Reading Program.
